About Awaking Earth
"You are not a separate being. You belong to the living body of Earth. You are the Earth, looking up at the stars. You are the Earth, becoming conscious of itself."
-Joanna Macy
Modern life often leaves us feeling fragmented, rushed, and disconnected from the world around us. Awaking Earth Health Coaching bridges that gap, using the wisdom of mindfulness, nature-based wisdom teachings, and the natural world to restore your internal balance and ignite your highest potential.
The Pillars
Mindful, Healthy Living (Self): Cultivating presence, and authenticity, to reduce chronic stress and mental clutter, maintain healthy balance (mind, body, soul, and earth), and open to inspiration from your highest self.
Community Connection (Humanity): Building place-based relationships to nourish our interconnected reality, with opportunities to give and receive.
Nature Connection & Sustainable Living (Earth): Integrating time with nature to slow down, listen, and be with our true nature, which is nature. Establishing conscious habits that honor both your personal wellbeing, other people, and the health of the planet.
Healing the Inner & Outer Nature: My Journey
My story began in the mid-Michigan woods. As a child of the 80s, born to teenage parents, I found my truest education not in the classroom—which I found stifling and dull—but with the turtles, the trees, and the forts I built with my cousins. In the woods, I found freedom, creativity, and a silent language of belonging.
Perhaps, equally formative was the fact that I am a multiracial, white-presenting woman, so throughout my life, I have known what it means to embody both/and identities. My diverse identity fueled my passion to continually seek out different perspectives and want to see things equitably from all perspectives.
That early connection to the earth and diverse perspectives became my anchor when life became complex. By 18, I was a single mother; by 23, I had my second child, navigating the challenges of poverty (The three birds in my logo represents my two daughters and me). These years were my greatest teachers. They stripped away judgment (of self and others) and replaced it with humility, an open heart, and a bone-deep understanding of the diverse perspectives that make up our human tapestry.
I entered college thinking I would become a therapist, driven by a desire to heal human suffering. But a single "Introduction to Environmental Science" course changed everything. Learning about the severity of our ecological crisis didn't just give me a career path; it lit a fire. I realized that the "nightmare" of our environmental reality was inseparable from the "nightmare" of our internal disconnection and the "nightmare" of social injustice, as well. I saw that we cannot heal the planet without healing the human relationship to the planet; without healing the relationship to humanity; without healing the relationship to self.
This realization became my Dharma. I committed myself to this path, eventually earning my Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate in Sustainability. I've learned that the bridge between science and Spirit are two sides of the same coin. As a scholar and a spiritual seeker, I humble myself before nature and learn to listen and reconnect to myself, others, and our world.
Today, my work is the synthesis of these experiences. I utilize The Work That Reconnects (WTR)—a group facilitation process developed by Joanna Macy—to help others move through the "spiral" of gratitude, self- and social- awareness, honoring our pain, seeing with new eyes, liberation, and going forth.
Whether I am coaching individuals, teaching in a classroom, or facilitating community workshops, my goal is the same: to articulate and manifest the mutual flourishing of people and planet. I believe that when we heal our inner reality, we naturally begin to heal the outer world. We aren't just on the Earth; we are the Earth. When we remember our interconnected reality, we find our way home. We do this together, and we do it for the liberation of all beings everywhere.

Ed.D. in Educational Sustainability
I received my doctoral degree in Educational Sustainability from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. My research was on Mindfulness in Sustainability Education, for which I designed and taught a university course, Mindfulness & Sustainability, at Northern Michigan University. I used the Sustainability Mindset Indicator Questionnaire (https://smindicator.com/), as developed by Dr. Isabel Rimanoczy) pre and post to assess course impact to students sustainability mindsets, which were found to have been significantly impacted by the course.
Master's in Community Sustainability & Bachelor's in Environmental Studies & Sustainability
My bachelor's and master's degrees are both from Michigan State University. For my master's research, I used Participatory Action Research to collaborate with a local low-income housing complex to design and create their own community and children's garden. The gardens are still growing and thriving today.
